This year has been The Apple year for me! I’ve got four new Apple gadgets in this year; AirPods 2nd gen, iPad Pro 10.5”, iPhone Xs Max and the latest that I just purchased a few days ago is MacBook Pro 15” with Touch Bar (2019)!
Well actually I was kinda lucky because the AirPods and iPhone are gifts from people. I don’t think I’d ever spend USD 1800 for a phone only, but for computer, I will and do for more if I can afford it. Because my work needs a laptop and a good one, especially if I want to purse more about motion graphic. My hobby and my work have a consequence of following the technology, so my old 2011 MacBook is of course already out of date even though I already upgraded it to 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD. It was working much faster than before, like a brand new computer but Apple is smart that they made the OS become too old to use some programs. So there are some work that I could not take just because I couldn’t have the program in my device at that time. Also, I’ve spent USD 300 for the upgrade and USD 135 for the new charger, with buying a new battery is just going to be the same like buying a new laptop (non-Mac).
I’d been wanting to buy a new one, but kept on delaying until one day, my 2011 MacBook Pro refused to be reliable anymore. The battery status has indicated needing a replacement, and it has to stay plugged in to use it. Not only that, the processing speed has dropped a lot, it took so long to do one action, let alone for work with lots of layers and multiple Adobe Programs at the same time.
I panicked because I am currently not in my country, I am in Cape Town, South Africa and will be here for at least three months. In Indonesia, there still are Apple services for old products, meanwhile I’ve tried in Cape Town, and they no longer have original spare parts for products older than 2013. Also I don’t know people here, I can’t just borrow other’s MacBook, my fiancé’s sister was also using hers. My fiancé’s laptop is actually a nice DELL one, but I’ve been just a MacBook Fangirl, I’ve forgotten how to use Windows. Haha, such a spoiled brat’s excuse. Anyway, I just wanted a new MacBook.
Due to another life challenge I am currently dealing with, my clients’ projects had been delayed for over a week and I needed to work ASAP so I decided to buy in Cape Town, which I originally thought of buying an original refurbished one from the US with a help of a friend whose husband’s coming to Durban in 14 days. But I didnt think I could wait for 14 days, otherwise I’d lose clients’ trust, so I sacrificed in spending more (because in SA the price of electronics are much higher) for a 2019 MacBook Pro 15”. So buying it in SA is actually not a smart decision for me, if I had waited just for the 14 days, I could’ve bought the new 16” one, with cheaper price than I paid for this. The one I bought is RZ 4,399 which was USD 2,900 meanwhile the new 16” one is USD 2,300ish! However, it’s done, so I just wanna focus on what I have than the opportunity I have missed.
Having been not able to download Keynotes and Pages and other programs, once I saw all the programs, I felt some kind of liberty, haha. Installed the Adobe 2020 and felt amazing how fast all these programs work in this laptop! I tried opening Indesign, Illustrator and After Effect at the same time and it has no lag! Only with Adobe XD I found it quite slow to open. When I upgraded my old Mac, I felt it was already fast enough for me, I mean I didn’t complain. But this one is super fast! The screen is amazingly bright and just like Apple quality screen!
The only thing so far that I don’t like and feel redundant is the keyboard and Touch Bar. As we know that Mac since 2015 has had problems with its butterfly keyboards. I can say that my 2011’s keyboard is the best and most crisp compared to all. The Touch Bar seems fancy but to be honest, I don’t really use it and just like many others, would prefer to have the Escape key than that. Well, I mostly use a bluetooth keyboard anyway when I work because I always put my laptop on a Nexstand so that the screen is the same height as my eyes.
I also bought a USB C adapter, not an Apple one but also not cheap 🙁 , it’s about USD 90. In Indonesia, I could’ve found something cheaper for the same quality but well, yeah…
This is the biggest spending I’ve made this year, triple the price of my Yoga Teacher Training 200hrs in May this year. But I am happy with it, I felt like I gifted myself an appreciation for the hardwork I’ve done. And at least, I spend my money for my work, not for useless or short-term fun. It will help me in doing my work so that I can work more efficiently. I consider this an investment.
